Company History
1946 On November 18, 1946,
D. Thomas Quick and his son Robert L. Quick invested $25,000 in
used buses in order to shuttle workers from Staunton to Waynesboro,
and Quick-Livick, Inc. was founded. When Robert’s brother
Earl F. Quick and friend Maurice E. Livick returned from military
service, they joined the business. The company’s operations
consisted of nine school buses, transporting duPont and two other
industrial companies’ employees on daily commuter runs and
serving local school routes.
1952 In 1952, when Livick
sold his stock to the Quicks, the company became wholly a Quick
family enterprise. Upon D. Thomas Quick’s death in 1961, Robert
L. Quick became president; Robert’s mother Elizabeth assumed
the role of vice-president; and his brother Earl the position of
secretary-treasurer. With Elizabeth’s passing in 1986, Deborah
Quick Ray, Robert’s daughter, left the health care industry
and joined the family’s transportation business; Earl Quick
semi-retired that same year.
1964 The company expanded
in 1964, moving to a larger garage and office and increasing their
fleet from nine to 26 luxurious, fully equipped motorcoaches. Bus
commuting in the area was being replaced with car commuting as the
economy improved, so the family decided to change the focus of its
business to charter bus service for special events and vacation
group tours.
1991 In 1991, Quick-Livick
purchased a Fredericksburg division from D&J Bus Service. Today
this branch office, doing business as Quick’s Commuter and
Charter, operates 35 of its own motorcoaches with 8 daily commuter
runs to Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C., as well as an increasing
number of group and organizational charters.
1992 Robert’s son,
Robert L. Quick, Jr., having retired from the U.S. Army, returned
home and joined the family business in 1992. A few years later,
Robert, Jr.’s two children joined the company, making it a
four-generation affair. His son Jason joined the company in 1994
and has worked at various positions for the company. He is currently
the general manager of the Fredericksburg office, where sister Kim
manages the charter operations since 1996.
1996 In 1996, Robert, Sr.
joined his brother Earl in semi-retirement after a distinguished
career earning a influential position in both the transportation
industry and his local community. He holds a permanent seat on the
board of the United Motorcoach Association. He is a long-standing
member of the Virginia Motorcoach Association and past president
of that organization, which presented him the distinguished Robert
T. Mitchell Award for service to the industry in 1984. As CEO of
Quick-Livick, Inc. he works with his children and grandchildren
to continue to expand the company.
2003 In the passing years,
that fleet has grown to 57 motorcoaches and Quick’s Bus Company
runs between 5,000-6,000 trips annually, traveling as far as California
and Canada. While part of their business remains commuter runs they
started with, Quick-Livick now does 95% of its business chartering
buses and averages over two million miles per year out of two locations
in Staunton and Fredericksburg. One thing that hasn’t changed
though -- the company remains a family business.
Today Although semi-retired,
Earl serves as Vice-President and continues to supervise the accounting
and computer operations of the company. A lifelong volunteer of
his services to charitable organization, he has served his church
as treasurer for the past forty-five years. Robert, Jr., is now
the company’s president overseeing the operational business
and the company’s growth. He, along with son Jason and Robert,
Sr., are active on committees for the Virginia Motorcoach Association.
Robert, Jr. plans to continue to grow the company while adhering
to the standards of quality, safety and customer service for which
this family business has come to be known.
